Northeast winds of 15–25 mph and persistent cloud cover from a departing frontal system are capping daytime heating in Chicago, keeping the September 20 maximum temperature tightly contested between the 68–69 °F and 70–71 °F bins that together command nearly 90 % of market-implied probability. National Weather Service guidance and ensemble model runs converge on a high near 70 °F under mostly cloudy skies and a 60 % chance of showers, with stronger onshore flow off Lake Michigan enhancing mixing and limiting insolation. Recent heavy rainfall on the 19th has left a cooler, moister boundary layer, while historical September 20 averages near 74 °F underscore how atypical the current pattern is. Traders are monitoring the next model cycle and any revisions to the official forecast for clues on whether marginal clearing could push readings into the low 70s or whether sustained cloud and wind keep the peak in the upper 60s.
