Yiwarr McGrath holds a commanding lead in the Mulka by-election market as Labor’s preselected candidate for the September 12 vote in the remote East Arnhem Land seat. McGrath, a Yolŋu registered nurse and community advocate from Galiwin’ku, was endorsed by Territory Labor shortly after independent incumbent Yingiya Mark Guyula resigned in mid-August, citing difficulties working with the CLP government. The seat’s history as a former Labor stronghold, combined with McGrath’s local ties and focus on healthcare access, has consolidated support in a short campaign against limited opposition, including independent Andrew Blamey. Traders appear to view the outcome as largely settled ahead of early voting and election day, though a late surge in independent preferences or unusually high turnout in remote communities could still alter the result.
