The short remaining window until 2027, combined with the historical rarity of magnitude 9.0+ events, underpins the 93.1% market-implied odds against occurrence. USGS records show these great earthquakes typically strike once or twice per century along major subduction zones, with the most recent being the 2011 Tohoku event; no current seismic monitoring data indicate accelerating strain accumulation or foreshock sequences that would signal an imminent rupture. Traders weigh this low baseline probability heavily, recognizing that forecast models and paleoseismic studies place annual global odds well below 2%. A sudden megathrust failure in regions such as Cascadia or the Aleutians could still shift sentiment, though such scenarios remain statistically remote without preceding geophysical precursors.
