Thorsten Kornblum, the SPD incumbent mayor of Braunschweig since 2021, holds a dominant position in the September 13, 2026, direct election for an eight-year term, with a possible runoff on September 27. His party’s delegates backed his renomination at 98.55 percent in November 2025, underscoring unified support within the largest local faction. Other confirmed candidates, including Michael Walther of the Greens and independents or smaller-party contenders such as Maximilian Pohler and Timothy Rathjen of Volt, face structural disadvantages in a contest where the incumbent typically benefits from name recognition, administrative record, and established voter networks. Traders’ heavy weighting toward Kornblum reflects the absence of major recent disruptions or polling shifts that would indicate a competitive challenge in the final weeks before voting.
