Recent developments in the UK Labour Party have elevated Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham as the clear frontrunner in the market for the next prime minister. Poor local election results and Starmer’s low approval ratings have triggered cabinet-level resignations and open calls for a leadership contest, with Burnham securing party approval to contest a by-election seat that would enable his return to Parliament. This timeline positions him ahead of other potential successors, including Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner, both of whom have signaled availability. Traders assess these internal pressures and Burnham’s broad party and public support as the dominant factors shaping current probabilities, while noting that any delay in the by-election or shifts in Labour’s parliamentary dynamics could alter the field.
