South Africa's 2026 inflation outlook reflects heightened uncertainty following the SARB's upward revisions to its annual forecast to 3.7 percent, driven by elevated global oil prices and supply disruptions tied to the Middle East conflict. With the central bank's target now anchored at 3 percent plus or minus 1 percentage point, traders weigh a base-case trajectory near 3.4 percent—supported by subdued food prices and a firmer rand—against upside risks from sustained energy costs that could push readings toward 4 percent or higher in coming quarters. Recent CPI prints easing to 3 percent in February before ticking up modestly underscore the narrow range of outcomes, while downgraded IMF growth projections add to downside pressures on demand-driven inflation. Key swing factors include the duration of geopolitical tensions and upcoming SARB monetary policy committee communications that will clarify the rate path and any second-round effects.
