The U.S. Embassy in Damascus has remained closed since its suspension in 2012 amid the Syrian civil war, with the Czech Republic handling protecting-power duties. Following the December 2024 fall of the Assad regime, initial diplomatic contacts increased, including a May 2025 flag-raising at the ambassador’s residence, yet full operations stayed on hold due to security conditions and Syria’s designation on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list. In February 2026 the Trump administration notified Congress of plans for a phased resumption of embassy functions, authorizing initial spending with no firm timeline or commitment to permanent staffing. Regional tensions, including March 2026 alerts over Iran-related threats and hostilities, have reinforced caution. Traders weigh these security, legislative, and policy factors against potential future stabilization or executive actions that could enable reopening.
