President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping concluded bilateral talks in Beijing on May 15 after a two-day state visit, the first such U.S. presidential trip in nearly a decade. Trump opened the meetings by praising their “fantastic relationship,” expressing respect for Xi as a “great leader,” and stressing partnership over rivalry. The leaders discussed trade imbalances, Taiwan arms sales, the Iran conflict, and emerging AI cooperation, while agreeing to form new bilateral economic and technology oversight bodies and scheduling a follow-up summit for September. Trader focus centers on how Trump’s emphasis on stability and personal rapport may shape messaging at future bilateral events, particularly amid unresolved frictions over Taiwan and supply-chain access.
