Esteban "Steve" Guerra captured the Democratic nomination for Cameron County Judge in the May 2026 primary runoff, defeating three-term incumbent Eddie Trevino Jr. by a 55-45% margin. As the Democratic standard-bearer in a heavily Democratic South Texas county, Guerra enters the November general election against Republican nominee Mauro Garza holding a commanding position in trader pricing. His prior role chairing the Brownsville Navigation District Board provides relevant executive and port-related experience in a border jurisdiction where local infrastructure, economic development, and cross-border issues shape voter priorities. Garza's campaign emphasizes business leadership and infrastructure upgrades, yet the county's consistent partisan voting patterns create substantial structural barriers for the Republican nominee. Late developments such as turnout shifts in key precincts, unforeseen scandals, or health events could still alter the trajectory, though none have materialized in recent months to narrow the gap.
