Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch’s January 2026 announcement that he would not seek a third term as National Rally of Independents leader or run in the September 2026 legislative elections has established a clear path for leadership transition. Under Morocco’s constitutional process, the King appoints the head of government from the largest party following parliamentary elections, removing any realistic prospect of Akhannouch’s return once a new coalition forms. The RNI promptly elected Mohamed Chouki as party president in February, formalizing the handover. Declining public confidence amid earlier youth-led protests over health, education, and living costs further weakened his position ahead of the vote. With no major political reversals in recent months, traders view his departure by year-end as the expected outcome of scheduled electoral and institutional steps.
