The Democratic Party of Korea enters the June 3, 2026, local elections with a structural advantage from President Lee Jae-myung’s sustained approval ratings above 60 percent and the People Power Party’s weakened position following prior national setbacks. Recent Gallup Korea polling shows the DP maintaining leads in key metropolitan races, including an 8-point edge for its Seoul mayoral candidate and competitive advantages in Busan, though margins have tightened slightly as opposition voters consolidate in urban strongholds. Party leader Jung Chung-rae’s candidate selections and replacement of several incumbent governors have reinforced organizational discipline, while hundreds of unopposed DP candidacies have already locked in early gains. These dynamics position outcomes around 12 to 14 wins out of 17 governor and mayor races as the most probable range, reflecting broad expectations of a solid but not total sweep.
