Janez Janša holds a commanding lead in the market for Slovenia’s next prime minister because his Slovenian Democratic Party secured the second-largest bloc in the March 2026 parliamentary election and is now advancing coalition negotiations after Robert Golob’s Freedom Movement conceded it could not assemble a majority. With the National Assembly poised to consider candidates in the second round of government formation, Janša has circulated draft guidelines to centre-right partners and benefited from recent procedural changes that reduced the number of ministries. Trader consensus reflects expectations of a straightforward confirmation by simple majority. The outcome could still shift if coalition talks encounter last-minute withdrawals, if parliament rejects the proposed cabinet, or if snap elections become necessary before year-end.
