Following the inconclusive March 2026 Slovenian parliamentary election, in which Robert Golob’s Freedom Movement secured a narrow one-seat edge over Janez Janša’s Slovenian Democratic Party but neither bloc reached the 46-seat majority threshold, Golob’s subsequent admission in late April that he could not assemble a coalition has shifted the initiative to Janša. As the largest opposition force, his party now leads active centre-right coalition negotiations with smaller parliamentary groups, a process that aligns with the president’s directive for lawmakers to nominate a viable prime minister candidate within the allotted timeframe. Traders assign Janša the dominant position because these talks appear on track for National Assembly confirmation. Potential disruptions remain limited to last-minute partner withdrawals, failure to secure the required votes, or a presidential decision to restart consultations that could reopen opportunities for alternative candidates.
