Frank Klingebiel, the CDU incumbent serving since 2006 and seeking a fourth term, advanced to the September 27 runoff as the clear frontrunner after securing 45.6 percent in the September 13 first round. No candidate reached an absolute majority in the six-way field, sending AfD candidate Patricia Mair (25.7 percent) into the head-to-head contest while eliminating the SPD (19.4 percent), Greens, and smaller-party entrants. Klingebiel’s established local profile, combined with the typical consolidation of centrist and moderate votes behind the leading non-AfD candidate in German municipal runoffs, underpins the strong trader consensus favoring his reelection. Mair’s advancement reflects notable AfD strength in Salzgitter’s council results, yet the first-round gap leaves limited realistic pathways for an upset absent major late developments. The direct-election format and short runoff window further favor the incumbent’s position.
