Belit Onay, the incumbent Green Party mayor of Hannover since 2019, secured 45.6 percent in the September 13 first round of the Oberbürgermeisterwahl, advancing to the September 27 runoff against SPD candidate and city treasurer Axel von der Ohe, who received 21.5 percent. This performance, well ahead of the CDU's Peter Karst at 14.1 percent and the AfD's Jessica Schülke at 10.8 percent, underpins trader consensus favoring Onay. As the first Green to hold the office, Onay benefits from incumbency and established policy focus on climate, mobility, and urban development amid a fragmented field. A runoff victory would extend his eight-year term, though factors such as turnout shifts or late voter realignment between the top two candidates could still influence the final outcome.
