Recent National Weather Service guidance highlights a deepening marine layer and onshore flow driven by an upper-level trough off the Pacific Northwest, keeping San Francisco temperatures 5–15°F below seasonal norms for late August. This setup favors overnight lows in the upper 50s as persistent stratus and southwest winds (10–20 mph) limit radiative cooling while advecting cool Pacific air. Historical averages near 56°F provide context, yet model consensus on exact minimums varies with the timing of any late-night clearing or boundary-layer mixing. Trader focus on the 54–59°F range reflects these subtle differences in marine-layer thickness and wind patterns expected through the August 31 overnight period.
