The Kuomintang's March 2026 nomination of Ji'an Township head Yu Shu-chen as its candidate for Hualien County magistrate has anchored trader consensus around her strong position ahead of the November 28 vote. Hualien's historical KMT leanings, combined with the party's internal poll-driven selection and a July national convention rally featuring its nominees, reinforce this implied probability. Potential challengers including independent Wei Chia-hsien and others such as Chang Chun, Yeh Yao-hui, and Lo Pei-chin face fragmented support amid reports of nomination disputes within KMT-aligned circles. Candidate registration opens shortly after the August 20 official election announcement, leaving limited time for major shifts before ballots are finalized.
