The collapse of coalition negotiations by incumbent Prime Minister Robert Golob after the March 2026 parliamentary elections has positioned Janez Janša as the frontrunner to lead Slovenia’s next government. Golob’s Freedom Movement secured a narrow plurality with 29 seats but could not assemble a majority, prompting the president to defer nomination and allowing parliamentary groups to advance candidates. Janša’s Slovenian Democratic Party, holding 28 seats, has advanced procedural steps including ministry reductions and draft coalition guidelines aimed at center-right partners such as New Slovenia and the Democrats. These developments have consolidated trader expectations around Janša’s return for a fourth term. Challenges could still arise if smaller parties withhold support or if renewed negotiations revive a center-left alternative before a formal vote.
