Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly endorsed Ramzan Kadyrov’s candidacy for another term during a Kremlin meeting on April 29, 2026, ahead of the scheduled September 20, 2026, election for head of the Chechen Republic. Kadyrov has repeatedly stated he will seek re-election only with Putin’s support, which has now been confirmed. Persistent speculation about Kadyrov’s health, including unconfirmed reports of kidney issues, continues to fuel succession discussions involving his sons and close allies such as Magomed Daudov and Adam Delimkhanov. Moscow’s preference for maintaining stability in the North Caucasus region, combined with Kadyrov’s long record of loyalty, shapes the current political dynamics surrounding any potential leadership transition.
