South Korea’s June 3 local elections for 17 metropolitan mayor and provincial governor posts feature the ruling Democratic Party holding a structural edge from national control of the presidency and legislature following the prior administration’s collapse. Candidate registrations completed in mid-May have clarified matchups in key battlegrounds such as Seoul, where DP nominee Chong Won-o faces incumbent PPP Mayor Oh Se-hoon, and Gyeonggi Province, pitting DP’s Choo Mi-ae against PPP’s Yang Hyang-ja. These races, alongside contests in Busan and other swing regions, remain sensitive to local turnout and campaign momentum, producing trader consensus clustered tightly around 12–13 DP victories. Late shifts in any of these pivotal districts could widen or narrow the final seat total before polls close.
