The preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for August 2026 printed at 51.0 on August 14, down 7.6% from July’s final 55.2 and below consensus forecasts near 54.5–55.0, with both the current-conditions and expectations sub-indices weakening amid rising year-ahead inflation expectations to 4.3%. The drop reversed two months of gains and reflected broad deterioration across demographics, driven by concerns over higher living costs tied to Middle East developments. With the final August reading due August 28, trader-implied probabilities concentrate in the 49.0–54.9 range, consistent with historical revisions around preliminary prints and the latest data point anchoring near 51.0.
