China’s July CPI print of 0.5% year-over-year, below consensus forecasts, has shaped trader positioning for the August release by highlighting ongoing weakness in domestic demand and further declines in food prices. Persistent moderation in non-food components and softer producer price momentum have kept the 0.5–0.6% and 0.7–0.8% brackets nearly even, reflecting uncertainty around monthly base effects, potential lagged effects from fiscal measures, and commodity price swings ahead of the early-September data. Stronger retail sales or upward revisions in core measures could lift odds toward the higher bracket, while continued demand softness or additional policy signals would reinforce the lower range.
