Recent July CPI data showing a modest 0.1% month-over-month gain and annual rate easing to 3.4% have anchored trader expectations for the August print near 0.3-0.4%. Cleveland Fed nowcasts currently project 0.35% for August, reflecting continued moderation in energy components alongside stable shelter contributions. The tight contest between 0.4% and 0.3% outcomes highlights sensitivity to month-to-month volatility in gasoline, food, and core services, with markets pricing in probabilities consistent with the post-shock trajectory from earlier 2026 energy and tariff pressures. Key upcoming releases, including additional labor market and producer price data ahead of the September FOMC, will likely refine these assessments as traders weigh the balance between cooling headline trends and persistent above-target underlying inflation.
