Recent Houthi territorial gains along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including the September 10 capture of Mokha port and the September 11 seizure of Perim (Mayun) island in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, have positioned the group to intensify threats against commercial shipping, particularly Saudi oil exports rerouted through the narrow waterway after Strait of Hormuz disruptions. These advances, amid the broader U.S.-Iran conflict, have already prompted Saudi Arabia to shut its East-West pipeline following reported attacks, lifted freight rates on China-Saudi routes by over 30 percent since July, and reduced Red Sea loadings. Traders are pricing elevated risks of kinetic strikes or blockades on Saudi-linked vessels, with the strait handling roughly 10-12 percent of global trade and serving as a critical alternative export lane for up to 3 million barrels per day of Saudi crude. Key near-term catalysts include potential Saudi or U.S. military responses and any escalation in Houthi maritime operations.
