The strong scientific consensus that no magnitude 10.0 or greater earthquake will occur before 2027 stems from the absence of any such event in the global seismic record and the geophysical constraints on fault rupture length and energy release required to reach that threshold on the moment magnitude scale. The largest documented quake, Chile’s 9.5 in 1960, involved an exceptionally long subduction-zone segment; modern monitoring by the USGS and international networks shows no current conditions—such as accumulated strain or foreshock sequences—capable of producing comparable or larger rupture in the next eight months. Historical recurrence intervals for great earthquakes in high-risk zones span decades to centuries, making an immediate jump to 10.0 statistically remote. While an unforeseen, rapid cascade along a major plate boundary could theoretically alter the outcome, such a scenario remains outside observed tectonic behavior and current monitoring data.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
