Incumbent Prime Minister Robert Abela holds a dominant position in the market for Malta's next prime minister ahead of the May 30 general election. His Labour Party maintains a clear polling lead after Abela called the snap vote to secure a renewed mandate on economic resilience and stability amid global energy pressures and geopolitical tensions. Abela has filed nominations in core districts and launched a manifesto emphasizing low unemployment and continuity, reinforcing trader consensus on his re-election. Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg, in office since September 2025, trails as the primary challenger by focusing on voter demand for change and fixed election terms. Other listed candidates show negligible traction. Shifts remain possible through late economic backlash, turnout surprises in proportional districts, or unresolved campaign issues before results finalize.
