Recent July University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment finalized at 55.2, up 11.5% from June amid easing gasoline prices following US-Iran tensions, with broad gains across demographics and year-ahead inflation expectations declining to 4.2%. Traders assign the highest probability (26.5%) to the August preliminary—due August 14—falling in the 52.0–54.9 range, reflecting uncertainty over the rebound's durability given still-elevated price levels, five years of cumulative inflation drag, and mixed labor-market signals. The tight distribution across 49–58 brackets highlights competing views on whether macro tailwinds or persistent inflation fatigue will shape early-August survey responses, consistent with the index's historically low base rates.
