Federal Reserve policy expectations dominate gold (XAU/USD) positioning heading into the week of September 14, 2026, with the FOMC meeting on September 15-16 serving as the immediate catalyst. Markets currently price a high probability of a 25 basis point rate hike, supported by recent CPI and PPI prints showing persistent inflation pressures and resilient labor data. Higher policy rates typically lift real Treasury yields and bolster the dollar, exerting downward pressure on gold prices that have consolidated near $4,300–$4,400 after earlier 2026 peaks above $5,500. Offsetting this, steady central bank purchases and ongoing geopolitical uncertainties continue to provide a structural bid. Traders will closely monitor the updated dot plot and Chair Warsh’s press conference for any shift in the projected rate path through year-end.
