Robert Abela’s position as incumbent prime minister and Labour Party leader drives the current trader consensus ahead of Malta’s May 30 general election. Labour has held power since 2013 and Abela called the snap vote from a position of strength, citing economic resilience and international challenges. The party’s organizational advantages, recent policy announcements on health reform and energy costs, and polling leads have reinforced expectations of a fourth consecutive term. Alex Borg, as Nationalist Party leader, offers the main alternative but trails significantly in both surveys and market pricing. Potential shifts could arise from late-campaign developments, unexpected turnout swings in key districts, or sudden policy reversals, though the election timeline leaves limited scope for major reversals before votes are cast.
