Robert Abela holds a commanding position as the clear frontrunner to remain Malta’s prime minister following his call for a snap general election on 30 May 2026. As incumbent leader of the Labour Party, Abela benefits from established party machinery, recent opinion polls showing Labour ahead by double-digit margins, and the advantages of governing during a period of geopolitical uncertainty that he cited as justification for advancing the vote. Traders have priced in these structural factors, assigning only modest probability to Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg despite his recent campaign rallies and criticism of government incumbency. Late-campaign developments such as unexpected polling shifts, high voter turnout surprises, or major scandals involving either major party could still alter the outcome before election night.
