Recent August CPI data showing a 0.4% month-over-month rise—matching consensus but with core prices advancing 0.3% versus 0.2% expected—has anchored trader focus on September's print amid elevated energy costs from Middle East supply shocks. Gasoline prices surged nearly 4% in August, lifting the headline rate to 3.4% year-over-year and pushing one-year inflation expectations higher in consumer surveys. Market-implied odds cluster tightly between 0.4% and 0.6% because ongoing fuel volatility and potential spillovers to services compete with signs of shelter moderation and the Federal Reserve's upcoming September policy decision, which futures now price with an 85% probability of a 25-basis-point hike. These factors create a narrow band where small deviations in energy or core components could shift resolution probabilities.
