Okinawa’s September 13 gubernatorial election remains competitive, with Genta Koja holding a modest lead in trader pricing over several rivals amid uncertainty over the U.S. base relocation from Futenma to Henoko. Incumbent Denny Tamaki, seeking a third term on an opposition platform, has faced wavering support since the February national lower-house vote shifted alliances, including formation of the Centrist Reform Alliance that includes parties more tolerant of the relocation plan. Koja, backed by the LDP and positioned to accept the Henoko move, benefits from that national momentum, while other declared or potential candidates such as Shun Kaneshima fragment the field. Campaigning begins later this month, leaving room for polling shifts, endorsement consolidations, or turnout patterns in key municipalities to alter the current tight distribution of probabilities.
