Recent July CPI data at 3.4% year-over-year, matching consensus and marking a second consecutive decline from June’s 3.5%, anchors trader expectations for August around 3.3–3.4%. Cleveland Fed nowcasts point to roughly 3.36% for the August headline reading, supported by moderating energy prices following earlier geopolitical spikes and continued shelter disinflation. Core measures remain contained near 2.5%, reflecting limited pass-through beyond volatile components. Market-implied odds reflect this narrow range amid uncertainty over base effects, potential energy volatility, and the September 11 release. The Fed’s steady policy stance at 3.50–3.75% reinforces focus on incoming data for any shift in the rate path.
