**Incumbent Clay Higgins (R) faces a fragmented field of Democratic challengers in Louisiana’s 3rd congressional district, a strongly Republican-leaning area covering southwestern Louisiana including Lafayette and Lake Charles.** Qualifying for the November 3, 2026, jungle primary closed August 5–7, with Higgins drawing multiple Democratic opponents such as Priscilla Gonzalez (who received about 19% in 2024), Tia LeBrun, John Day, and Caleb Walker, plus limited additional Republican entries. In Louisiana’s open-primary system, an outright win requires more than 50% of the vote; otherwise a December 12 runoff follows. Higgins’s prior 70.6% performance and the absence of a unified or high-profile challenger create conditions where vote splitting among Democrats makes a first-round majority probable. Trader consensus at 92.5% “Yes” reflects this structural advantage, with limited recent polling or developments suggesting a competitive threat that could force a runoff. Upcoming candidate filings and any late endorsements remain the main variables before November.
