Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran's president since 2024, continues to navigate internal divisions and post-conflict diplomacy following the 2026 war that included the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Hardline factions within the Assembly of Experts and elsewhere have opposed his push for U.S. negotiations to resolve the "neither war nor peace" standoff, particularly over Strait of Hormuz transit arrangements, while Pezeshkian has publicly affirmed unity with the new Supreme Leader and denied repeated unverified reports of offering or threatening resignation. These persistent rumors, combined with his constrained authority in Iran's constitutional system and ongoing economic pressures from sanctions, shape trader assessments of whether he completes his term or departs earlier through formal resignation, removal, or other mechanisms. Upcoming diplomatic milestones or shifts in hardliner influence could affect timelines.
