Incumbent Prime Minister Robert Abela holds a commanding position in the race for Malta’s next prime minister ahead of the May 30 snap general election, reflecting the Labour Party’s sustained dominance since 2013 and consistent polling leads of roughly 13 points over Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg. Abela called the early vote on April 27 to secure a fresh mandate for stability amid rising energy costs tied to Middle East tensions, while emphasizing economic resilience, low unemployment, and continuity in campaign messaging. Borg, elected opposition leader only months earlier, focuses on renewal and fixed election terms but faces structural headwinds as a relatively new challenger. Trader consensus at 90.5% for Abela could shift if late polling swings occur, voter concerns over inflation intensify, or unexpected developments emerge before election day.
