Romania's fractured parliament triggered a major shift after ousting Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in a no-confidence vote on May 5, 2026, ending the pro-European four-party coalition and leaving President Nicușor Dan to consult parties on forming a new government. Traders have positioned economist Delia Velculescu ahead because her technocratic background, IMF experience, and non-partisan profile align with efforts to secure a stable pro-Western majority without reopening coalition rifts. Other leading names such as Șerban Matei and Sorin Grindeanu represent specific party interests that face greater hurdles in assembling cross-bloc support. Key differentiators include each contender's perceived ability to navigate fiscal commitments to the EU and avoid early elections. Upcoming presidential consultations and parliamentary confidence votes could quickly consolidate backing behind one candidate if a viable majority emerges.

To count for resolution, the individual must be formally appointed by the President of Romania and receive a vote of confidence from Parliament, resulting in the official formation of a new government. Any interim or caretaker Prime Minister who does not receive a parliamentary vote of confidence will not count toward the resolution of this market.
If no such Prime Minister takes office by December 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “Other”.
The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the Government of Romania; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
