The closely contested Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Landtag election on September 20, 2026, features recent polling showing the AfD leading at 35–36% against the SPD at 28–29%, producing a polarized contest that has heightened campaign activity and regional media attention within Germany’s cluster of eastern state votes. This dynamic, measured against the 70.8% turnout benchmark from the 2021 election, leaves traders split near 50-50 on whether participation will rise or fall. AfD mobilization and protest-voting patterns common in eastern Landtag races provide upward pressure on engagement, while the absence of major eligibility changes, combined with potential voter fatigue from the dense 2026 schedule, supports expectations of modest decline. Late shifts in visibility, party get-out-the-vote efforts, or unexpected national developments could still alter the balance before election day.
