Recent July University of Michigan data showed a sharp rebound to 55.2 from 49.5 in June, aided by cooling gasoline prices post-Middle East tensions, though the reading remained 10.5% below year-ago levels amid five years of elevated prices. Traders price the August preliminary reading—due August 14—most heavily in the 52–57.9 range, reflecting uncertainty over whether inflation expectations (eased to 4.2% year-ahead in July) will stay contained or reaccelerate, alongside labor-market resilience and Fed policy signals. Persistent consumer focus on purchasing power and durable-goods affordability creates a narrow band for outcomes, with any hotter-than-expected CPI or retail-sales prints likely to weigh on sentiment while further energy-price relief could support the upper end of current market-implied odds.
