China’s July CPI reading of 0.5% year-on-year, well below consensus expectations, has anchored trader positioning for the August annual figure, with the 0.7-0.8% bracket attracting the largest share of probability. Persistent weak domestic demand, declining food prices, and softer non-food inflation—driven by lower oil costs and subdued consumer spending—continue to exert downward pressure. Industrial overcapacity and the lingering property sector slowdown further limit upward momentum in the near term. The National Bureau of Statistics release scheduled for early September will resolve the market, while any acceleration in fiscal support or shifts in global commodity prices could alter the distribution before then.
