Robert Abela holds a commanding position in the market for Malta’s next prime minister ahead of the snap general election scheduled for 30 May. As the incumbent Labour Party leader since 2020, he benefits from established party dominance, recent polling leads over the Nationalist Party, and the strategic timing of the early vote to seek a renewed mandate amid geopolitical uncertainty. Traders reflect this consensus through high implied probabilities, consistent with Labour’s track record of securing consecutive terms and the limited window for opposition momentum to build before election day. Alex Borg, the Nationalist leader, trails significantly, with other candidates remaining marginal. Shifts could still occur if late polling swings, unusually high turnout in key districts, or unexpected campaign developments alter the narrow margins seen in current surveys.
