China’s July CPI reading of 0.5% year-on-year, well below consensus and the softest print in months, has kept trader focus on subdued domestic demand and persistent food-price weakness, particularly pork amid ample supply. Softer non-food gains tied to lower transport costs and easing global energy prices have reinforced expectations that August annual inflation will remain near recent lows. The tight contest between the 0.7–0.8% and 0.5–0.6% brackets reflects uncertainty over whether weak retail sales momentum and producer-price moderation will continue or yield to seasonal holiday effects, any fresh policy support, or commodity rebounds. Fresh data on industrial output, key price categories, and external demand before the September release could widen the gap.
