Recent preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment data at 47.8, down 7.5% month-over-month from August amid a resurgence in gasoline prices and renewed trade tensions, has anchored trader consensus around the 46.0–48.9 range. One-year inflation expectations climbed to 4.6%, the highest since June, while expectations for personal finances and business conditions deteriorated as consumers cited greater pressure on household budgets from energy costs linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict. Broader context includes a stable labor market with unemployment near 4.1–4.3%, resilient GDP growth above 2%, and the Federal Reserve’s September 16 rate hike to the 3.75–4% target range in response to sticky core PCE inflation around 3.2%. These developments, alongside Goldman Sachs analysis tying weak readings partly to non-economic factors like declining happiness and institutional trust, explain the market-implied odds while leaving room for revision in the final release.
