Recent hotter-than-expected August core CPI at 0.3% month-over-month, driven by a nearly 4% surge in gasoline prices amid Middle East supply concerns, has reinforced trader focus on persistent energy and pipeline pressures heading into the September reading. With headline CPI also printing 0.4% month-over-month in line with consensus and the annual rate holding at 3.4%, markets price elevated odds around a 0.5% September month-over-month outcome as the leading scenario. Key swing factors include further energy volatility, shelter cost trends, and any early signs of goods price pass-through from producer data. The October 14 CPI release will provide the first full post-FOMC view, while near-term labor and producer price prints could shift implied probabilities ahead of resolution.
