This follows May’s 0.5% gain that pushed the year-over-year rate to 4.2%, its highest since April 2023, largely from energy prices elevated by geopolitical supply shocks. Traders appear to price in a rapid unwinding of those one-off energy effects alongside contained core pressures at 0.23% in the latest nowcast. Key upcoming catalysts include any June retail sales or producer-price data that could alter the trajectory ahead of the July 14 release. A sharper rebound in gasoline or shelter costs could still push the outcome above the threshold.
