The Virginia Supreme Court's 4-3 ruling on May 8 struck down a voter-approved constitutional amendment authorizing mid-decade congressional redistricting, citing procedural violations in bypassing an intervening election, thereby preserving the current 2021 map—favoring Democrats 6-5—for the 2026 midterms. Governor Abigail Spanberger confirmed on May 14 that the state will conduct elections under this existing map, as the May 12 deadline for changes has passed and early voting preparation begins soon. Despite Democrats' emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to reinstate their proposed 10-1 advantage map, traders price a 93% consensus against its use, viewing reversal as improbable given tight timelines and institutional reluctance near elections.
