Virginia’s existing congressional districts, drawn after the 2020 census and used since 2022, will remain in place for the 2026 midterms. Voters narrowly approved a Democratic-backed constitutional amendment in April 2026 that would have authorized a new map favoring Democrats in ten of eleven districts, but the Virginia Supreme Court invalidated the referendum on May 8 for procedural violations of the state constitution. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to reinstate the map on May 15, and state officials have confirmed the current lines meet the deadline for finalizing ballots. These successive rulings eliminated the only active pathway for mid-decade redistricting, producing the strong trader consensus against a new map.
