Recent polling averages position leftist Iván Cepeda as the clear first-round leader ahead of the May 31 vote, leaving right-wing outsider Abelardo de la Espriella to consolidate support against center-right Senator Paloma Valencia for second place. De la Espriella’s hardline security platform, including proposed military strikes and crop fumigation, has drawn voters frustrated with ongoing violence and drug trafficking. Valencia’s strong performance in March coalition primaries has not translated into equivalent first-round momentum, while lower-polling centrists such as Sergio Fajardo and Claudia López remain fragmented. The market’s heavy weighting toward de la Espriella reflects this competitive dynamic among opposition candidates, with only two weeks remaining until ballots close.
