Brazil’s central bank cut the Selic rate by 25 basis points to 14.00% at its August 5 meeting, marking the fourth consecutive quarter-point reduction and aligning with the 83% market-implied probability of another 25 bps easing in September. Cooling headline inflation to 4.64% year-over-year in June, alongside moderating economic activity, has supported the easing cycle, though core measures and 2026 inflation expectations near 5.0% keep risks skewed to the upside. Policymakers emphasized data dependence without forward guidance, leaving the outcome sensitive to incoming releases on prices, activity, and global conditions ahead of the September Copom decision. The modest 13% odds of no change reflect ongoing caution amid elevated expectations and geopolitical uncertainty.
