Noel Thomas leads the Galway West by-election market because traders see Independent Ireland's local organization and anti-establishment appeal gaining ground among rural and independent voters in a fragmented field. Recent campaigning has focused on cost-of-living pressures, housing shortages, and migration, where Thomas has positioned himself alongside fuel-price protesters, while Seán Kyne, the Fine Gael senator and former TD, emphasizes government experience and second-preference flows. An early-May Irish Times/TG4 poll showed Kyne narrowly ahead on first preferences, yet the betting consensus reflects expectations that transfers from eliminated independents and smaller parties will favor Thomas in the single-seat contest. Labour's Helen Ogbu and the Social Democrats' Míde Nic Fhionnlaoich remain competitive for left-leaning votes, but the wide candidate list increases uncertainty around final tallies when polls close on May 22.
